Lyngby Boldklub had an equaliser against Brøndby disallowed following a VAR review in Sunday's defeat. Referee Jakob Sundberg has now explained the decision that chalked off a goal from Frederik Gytkjær.
The match at Brøndby Stadion ended 5-2 to the hosts, extending Lyngby's poor run to three consecutive defeats. The team now sits 11th in the Superliga with seven points from ten games. The loss followed a controversial incident where Gytkjær found the net to make it 1-1.
The VAR call
Sundberg was called to the monitor to review a challenge from Max Ejdum in the build-up to the goal. After the review, he awarded a free-kick to Brøndby. "I must go away from the screen with the most correct decision, and for me, it is a free-kick here," the referee said. He emphasised that he does not distinguish between big and small fouls, only whether an offence occurred.
The attack was deemed to still be ongoing, even though a Brøndby player had touched the ball in the 14 seconds between the foul and the goal. The decision proved a key turn in a match where Brøndby ended a four-game losing streak.
Lyngby must now regroup for an important home fixture against FC Nordsjaelland on October 18th. Their performances this spring will be key to reversing the negative trend, which is also reflected in our standings.
